1965 Clamshell Headlights?? Empty
PostSubject: 1965 Clamshell Headlights??   1965 Clamshell Headlights?? EmptyMon Jul 20, 2009 5:29 pm

What's the best way to restore the clamshell headlights on a 1965 Riviera? Did the original mechanism work well, should I restore it to stock? Or is it worth redoing it with new actuators? I've heard the original clamshells didn't work well.

Also, I'm new to this forum, so if this isn't the proper place for this post, please direct me to where it should go.

Thanks.

Welcome Kenny,
There a few guys on here with older Riv's that can probably help you with your headlights. I personally don't have any experience with them.

Welcome to the Forum thumbsup

My first suggestion for any/all info concerning a '65 Riviera would be to join the Riviera Owners Association (ROA), info can be found at www.rivowners.org.

I have some info saved on my computer, one is a five page PDF file on rebuilding the motor, I don't find a way to attach it here so if you send me your e-mail address I can send it to you.

There are a couple of other forums that address the headlight motor issues, one is here:
http://forums.aaca.org/f177/65-headlight-motor-262705.html

And this quote talks about the 28 page Service Bulletin that is available to ROA members:
Quote :
There are many factors which can cause problems in the `65 headlight system. Most need to be addressed after many years. The best approach is to use a 28 page Service Bulletin which Buick ultimately published after several piecemeal Bulletins. Copies are available from the ROA.
The headlight motors are expensive and becoming more so as time marches on. For this reason, I urge members like yourself to familiarize themselves with the complete system, to prevent burning out a new motor. The Service Bulletin will provide you with the info you need to accomplish this.
The motors are available rebuilt, NOS or one can make up a motor by modifying a pass side power vent window motor.

The system when operating properly works fine, that would be the relays, the motor, the micro switches, the linkages, and the headlight visors all working as they should.

Here is a link to a video of one guy that converted his to linear actuators:

That might be one way to go if you so desired?

HTH

Let me know if you want the PDF file I have and I'll get it to you.
