| Hello, I've been having a strong gasoline smell come off the vents in my 97 Riviera. It also seems to come from under the car, although I haven't found any visible leaks yet. Are there any known trouble areas to look for? Thank you. Mikel | |

| You should look closer and will probably find a leak somewhere. Remove the engine cover and look closely. Also jack the car up where you can get underneath it and examine all the fuel lines and tank area, filter etc. Bert | |

| also (immediately) check the nylon fuel lines in the engine compartment just in front of the cowl, part are under the engine cover and part are not.
As Bert says, you will probably fined a leak somewhere.

| One of the fiberglass hoses had split right at a joint, next to the cowl. Fixed! Thank you all. | |

Thank you all. Glad you found your leak, and fixed it. I thought I would pass this along. I have a friend with a 97 Riviera. He had a gasoline smell that he could not find for about a year. No visible leaks anywhere and he checked everywhere. At least he thought he had until he looked under the access panel for the fuel pump. There are metal fingers molded into the gas tank that grab the twist lock ring that holds the fuel pump assembly in. What had happened was a few of those fingers had rotted to the point that the pump was sitting up at an angle, and that was his problem. He said there was a lot of sand and debris back there and also quite a bit of rust. I checked mine a few weeks back and found quite a bit of rust and debris. I wire brushed it, hit with some rust reformer, and put some white grease in there to seal out as much moisture as possible. I advise anyone with a 95-99 Riv to check that area. My friend told me the fix for his problem was expensive and a royal pain in the butt. An ounce of prevention | |

| I just discovered and fixed a gas leak this past weekend on the '96. While looking for a coolant leak (waterpump) I smelled raw gas, and noticed staining on top of the supercharger. Started the car and sure enough, there was a small pinhole weeping leak from the 5/16" line right were it enters the fuel rail! Bought one of those Dorman repair kits #800-57 and that took care of it. I don't know how long I have been driving around with that time bomb under the hood! I'm sure all summer. The wife did mention she thought the car smelled like gas at one time. I didn't tell her I found a leak, lest I be given repeated "I told you so's." | |
