raw gas smell Empty
PostSubject: raw gas smell   raw gas smell EmptySat Aug 18, 2012 11:45 am

Other day my stock supercharged riviera i started to smell a lot of gas when sitting at idle. So i check for an exhaist leak didnt find one but will under the car it smells very strong oder of gas. Pull the spark plugs an it smelled like they where soaked in gas. I just put them in say two weaks ago. I put new spark plugs and exhaust manifold gaskets and a new donut gasket on the car yesterday and had same symptoms. Now im thinking it could be a bad maf sensor but it does give any codes for it. Olny code is a knock sensor code. My friend who specialize in transmission think some is wrong with the heads on it for the spark plugs smell like raw gas. I dont know what to do dont wanna take heads off because got to wait til wensday before i can get new ones. Any every have this problem before? Or any ideas? And also what else could make give off raw gas smell?

Were the plugs black, carbon fouled? Raw gas smell is usually a leak of some sort. A very common cause is a rusted out retainer ring on the gas tank, where the fuel pump is. There is an access panel in the trunk under the insulation. Have a look in there.

Yes carbon fouled and very black for how long they where in for. It only smells of gas while car is under load or when idle is jumping due to the exhaust leal that i cant find i thoughy manifolds so changed both with new gaskets. Still lealong somewhere close to engine. Whats chance of where manis meet that gasket goes bad would same symptoms happen? And what would cause the car to fell as though it is stalling/hesitating while it accelerating? I

I have check fuel system front to back about gas smell and found no signs of wear or even any leaks.

Too much fuel pressure, leaky injectors. That's all I can think of. Running your engine like that will DESTROY the catalytic converter. It will overheat and collapse pretty quickly. Very unusual for a FI engine to dump gas like that. An exhaust leak shouldn't matter.

Another idea - check the nylon fule lines and their connectors. Maybe a leak into the sparkplug wells.

Should be the injectors [back-right under hood]. My O-ring broke off one time and a whole TANK of gas drained out as I hurried back home before I ran out. Just plug it back up and you could probably makeshift an O-ring. Or atleast some other security.
