Nope, never offered from the factory. It's aftermarket. LOL saw a Grand Prix with a vinyl top on it the other day....looked as queer as a $3 bill.

Yeah, you would definitely not see that kind of top on any factory car since the early 90's at least. It's more of a seventies and eighties thing which some people insist on keeping around. IIRC GM banned it's dealerships from adding vinyl tops to the CTS for fear it would damage the image of the car. Nice little profit maker for the dealer, gives them an excuse to jack up the price on people who don't know any better.

Yes, it was probably dealer-installed. Technically it's not a "vinyl top", like the RPO stickers referred to, but rather something that GM or Ford called a "Carriage Roof" option - a faux convertible top, as opposed to a full vinyl or padded landau top...

It was probably Ford that coined the term, because the earliest example I can think of was on the Lincoln Mark V, before it ever appeared on early 80's Eldorados.

I wonder what became of the handful of G-body Rivs that were converted into true convertibles by that outfit in Florida?

Are the fake convertible tops easily removed, or are they bolted down?

Oh god, not vinyl roofs! Old people won't stop ruining cars with those. As you can tell, I hate them. I think the ugliest vinyl roof car I ever saw was a 2002 dodge stratus, ugh!
