| hopefully tomorrow after some strong-arming and sweet talking they'll be on.. going to pick up two 3 inch tail pipes to run off the back of them.. so it's going to be somewhere around 4 hangers, 6 clamps or so and two reducers lol.. | |

| alright well.. I cut the old ones off.. then went to go and pick up the reducers.. and it turns out autozone doesn't have any that are 3 inches and reducing... so now i'm going to have to order 3 inch reducer to 2 inch, then a 2 inch to 1 7/8 inch...... it really sucks... but at least my car sounds mean straight pipe lol... any tips on maybe finding a 3 inch to 1 7/8 reducer? | |

| why do you want a 3" to 1 7/8 reducer? for AFTER the mufflers so you can reuse the tips? just fab something up using 3" tips. don't go smaller after the muffler. | |

| don't do the work twice. Pay for the 3" DP and go 3" to a 3" Y. You will save money.
If you MUST pay for it twice, go to a 2.25 Y and use 3"to 2.25 reducer. Don't reuse 1 7/8, you are defeating the purpose of your nice mufflers.

| apparently if I put my new mufflers on with the stock piping after the y, i'll be wasting my money.. so if anyone can find a y pipe I can use that's 2 1/4 inlet with 3 inch outlet.. that'd be cool..
also what's the difference between a y pipe and a collector?

| I have one of these brand new for a good price if you need it: (single 2.5" to dual 2.25") _________________ '05 GTO 6.0L • 6-spd • 95k miles • 0-60: 4.8s • 16.9 avg MPG • Nelson Ledges Lap: 1:26'95 Celica GT 2.2L • 5-spd • 165k miles • 0-60: yes'98 SC Riviera • 281k miles • 298 HP/370 TQ • 0-60: 5.79s • ET: 13.97 @ 99.28 • 4087 lb • 20.1 avg MPG • Nelson Ledges Lap: 1:30 3.4" pulley • AL104 plugs • 180º t-stat • FWI w/K&N • 1.9:1 rockers • OR pushrods • LS6 valve springs • SLP headers • ZZP fuel rails KYB GR2 struts • MaxAir shocks • Addco sway bars • UMI bushings • GM STB • Enkei 18" EV5s w/ Dunlop DZ101s • F-body calipers EBC bluestuff/Hawk HP plus • SS lines • Brembo slotted discs • DHP tuned • Aeroforce • Hidden Hitch^^^ SOLD ^^^ '70 Ninety-Eight Holiday Coupe 455cid • 116k miles^^^ SOLD ^^^ | |

| it is very rare for people to go for a Y pipe that is bigger AFTER the split. I don't know why such a product would exist. A 2 1/4 Y with reducers might do it though.
I would say the difference between a y pipe and a collector is only the direction of the flow.

| not entirely sure if this is falling on deaf ears or not.. but here's what i've come up with.. any input is greatly appreciated.. 1) Remove the stock Y pipe 2) Replace the stock Y pipe with 2 1/4 inch inlet, 3 inch outlet Y collector 3) Put either one 45 degree bend on each outlet of the collector (or 3 inch flexible tubing whichever is cheaper) 4) 3 inch muffler on the end of the tubing coming from the collector 5) 3 inch inlet/outlet tailpipe off the muffler like I said.. any thoughts are greatly appreciated.. i'd like to finish this project up asap | |

| yes, you've pretty much got it. Good luck finding a 2.25" into 2x 3" Y-pipe though. I'm sure you know the pipe pictured will not do because you need to have the 2 top branches of the Y bigger than the bottom, like this
3 3 Y 2.25
a "2 1/4 inch inlet, 3 inch outlet Y collector" as you describe it, will not work, because a collector COLLECTS, it flows from the 2 pipes INTO the one pipe. As I said, you probably know what I mean, just don't buy a pipe based solely on the above description.

| That will work better than all of the reducers you were considering. You're limiting yourself upstream by using the 2 1/4 pipe if you want to do any future exhaust work. | |

| so i've pretty much fµ©k myself over on this or what? this is all new to me.. but I guess i'm not understanding a Y collector correctly.. if i'm annoying you, then maybe I shouldn't ask questions.. it's just discouraging when I drop 130 bucks on mufflers, cut off my stock mufflers then i'm left with no clue what to do now. that Y collector flows from the single pipe and out of the dual side? or vice versa? | |

| It does not matter what the name of the "split" is, as long as you have a single 2.25" diameter pipe that seperates into TWO 3" pipes.
IMO, such a pipe (if it even exists) will be hard to find. I can't think of any reason a company would make such a produt (why would you have 2 rivers merge into a stream?). You may very well be forced to buy a Y pipe that is one 2.25 that splits into 2 x 2.25 and then use reducers, installed backwards (essentially becoming enlargers...let's call them venturi cones) that are 3" to 2.25"
Also, I believe the term "y pipe" is used to designate a single pipe that splits into two pipes while "collector" is used to designate two pipes that merge into one. It basically is the same part, but the "inlet" side of a collector will have 2 pipes while the inlet side of the "Y-pipe" will have a single pipe. Maybe summit or jegs or whatever exhaust company only uses the term collector, just remember you will be using it BACKWARDS.
That is why when you say "Replace the stock Y pipe with 2 1/4 inch inlet, 3 inch outlet Y collector" you are refering (andn have included a photo of) a split that has two 2.25" pipes (inlet side) merging into a larger 3" pipe (outlet). Clearly, this is the opposite of what you need.

| Can anyone confirm what if any part of the exhaust is double wall? I think it would help Ryan to know this beforehand. When I cut my pipe upstream of the resonator, it was 2.5" single wall.
Edit: for the Y-"collector" I have, I said it was 2.5" in, 2.25" out, but I think it's actually 2" out. _________________ '05 GTO 6.0L • 6-spd • 95k miles • 0-60: 4.8s • 16.9 avg MPG • Nelson Ledges Lap: 1:26'95 Celica GT 2.2L • 5-spd • 165k miles • 0-60: yes'98 SC Riviera • 281k miles • 298 HP/370 TQ • 0-60: 5.79s • ET: 13.97 @ 99.28 • 4087 lb • 20.1 avg MPG • Nelson Ledges Lap: 1:30 3.4" pulley • AL104 plugs • 180º t-stat • FWI w/K&N • 1.9:1 rockers • OR pushrods • LS6 valve springs • SLP headers • ZZP fuel rails KYB GR2 struts • MaxAir shocks • Addco sway bars • UMI bushings • GM STB • Enkei 18" EV5s w/ Dunlop DZ101s • F-body calipers EBC bluestuff/Hawk HP plus • SS lines • Brembo slotted discs • DHP tuned • Aeroforce • Hidden Hitch^^^ SOLD ^^^ '70 Ninety-Eight Holiday Coupe 455cid • 116k miles^^^ SOLD ^^^
