Why do you want to do this? Yes it is safe, the only real danger is probably your belt getting snagged and ripped to shreds... And it's not an accurate comparison to a NA 3800, which runs higher compression and no non-functional SC in the air path.

When you get it off, work the belt into a part of the mount bracket so that it's not near the crank pulley. zip tie it up top - tightly.

Man, I don't know, it's kind of a dog w/o the SC belt on. I've been driving that way for a few weeks now. No WOT, but some hard acceleration. It's just night and day compared to being SC'd.

I'd be willing to bet more than that. These things are dogs without the supercharger. If you do run it like that though , maybe if you advance the hell out of your timing ( 93 octane +8.5:1 compression= a lot of room for advance) you have a small chance of keeping up. but most likely he'll pull like crazy.

The way I remember it, when you hit the gas with the belt off, it just stops accelerating about 50%. Pressing the pedal past that won't push the car any faster!

I remember about 3 weeks after I got my riv, I noticed the s/c belt was put on wrong, and was slowly walking off the pulley, which made a small slit in the belt. One day I had a couple of friends in the car, and I floored it spun the tires a good 20 feet, and slowed down, (which had caused the belt to come right off of the pulleys. Man, that was the most boring 10 minute drive to the mechanics shop. It was almost as slow as my first car, a 1993 Plymouth Sundance. No lie. Not to mention the dohc vtec makes nearly 200 hp, if that's the same engine i'm thinking of.

lol, the VTEC in most late 90's Civics is only 127 HP but they're lightweight. The Civic Si ('99 I think) however has 170 HP. None of them are around 200 unless they're in the Prelude or something.

I said dohc vtec, which is exactly what's in a prelude. I know next to nothing about hondas.

too bad the torque sucks... and the nature of a Vtec gives it a crappy powerband.. you can see where it switches to the high rpm cam:
lets compare that to say... a supercharged 4.4 lc3: http://www.gmperformanceparts.com/EngineShowcase/dynochart.jsp?engId=44LLC3Northerstar&engine=4.4L%20LC3%20Northstar&sku=17802896&engCat=rpo

You dont need to take the mount off. There is a bolt under the mount that has a guide around it. If you take that bolt off, and slide it out the belt can slip in between. I didnt noticed this until after taking the motor mount off to replace the belt. Much easier than taking the entire mount off.

He wasn't replacing the belt, just unhooking it to see how it would perform w/o the SC functioning. But you are correct, the mount only has to come off if the lower idler pulley, that sits smack in front of the mount, is also going to be replaced.

Hello ye all,
well, it happened. Idler pulley MELTED. It seems that bearing went totally bad and plastic wheel melted itself off, so SC is now out.
From Write-Up: Replacing Belts and Pulleys
3) Supercharger idler pulley (grooved, #38009, left hand thread)
It will take 1,5 - 2 weeks before I'll get replacement part, so is there any danger if driving Riv on daily basis, or should I take my dad's -88 Corvette and drive it while waiting? Car seems to work well without it, engine runs smoothly, but I haven't put pedal to the metal, of course.
I'll change all pulleys and belts at the same time.

If you drive without that belt, there is a definite danger of getting shut down by a Honda! (Not to mention, it makes a good excuse to drive the Vette for a while...)

You can safely drive without the SC belt on, as long as the 96 models have a dedicated SC belt that doesn't run any accessories? I had thought the 95-96 cars couldn't do this, maybe it was just the 95's. You'll be way down on power, I'd just drive easy instead of trying any WOT stuff. I drove my 98 for a week or 2 that way also, until I had time to replace all the pulleys and belts.
