It looked like series I... Or I should say it looked about identical to mine. the cover wasn't on it but everything was in just about the same configuration, the EGR valve looked different. MAF AFH50M 02E doesn't match mine

I never looked, man. all I can tell you is the MAF was a different number than mine and the EGR was the other type not the drum type. it had what looked like the same supercharger with the grey coating on it and most of the engine gear looked the same. Shame there was only one Riviera and it was pretty thrashed most of the interior was gutted and broken. So I messed around with the car some more and I got it to run a bunch of times but then the idle drops and starts chugging til it dies.... at this point I still don't know what's wrong. I swapped out the MAFS and EGRS quite a few times. I was turning the valve in the with a screwdriver seeing if it did anything but NAPES. I actually got it to run (barely) with the Lasabre EGR although not as good.

| Really sounds like a bad maf if it starts and dies. Next time you get it goin hold the rpms around 3000 and see if it still dies. Ill be takin a trip to the local yard within the next week and iirc there was a 95 riv last time i was there, ill see what i can do for you at that time if you still dont have it goin | |

| Well, The mafs look identical, but the numbers are different and it did nothing for helping out with the running issue, but i'll save it just in case. The only other thing I can think of other than EGR is possibly fuel pump... maybe cam sensor? I'll buy from you if I don't have things sorted out by then. I'm gonna have to wait a week or two before I can put anymore money into the car. I'm having a guy come scan the car on saturday, hopefully his tool will read any codes. | |

| Dude, stop wasting your money on parts that you dont need. For $900+ you couldve already brought your car to a dealership and had it DIAGNOSED correctly and probably even fixed. Until you try a new MAF im done trying to help. | |

| I haven't read anything about an SES light. If the MAF sensor is bad, it should trip the lamp. It does on a Series II SC anyway. You say you were going to get it scanned for DTC codes. I think this is a really good idea, and cheaper than throwing parts at it. I can't imagine there are no codes stored in there at this point. Might tell you everything you need to know. _________________ '05 GTO 6.0L • 6-spd • 95k miles • 0-60: 4.8s • 16.9 avg MPG • Nelson Ledges Lap: 1:26'95 Celica GT 2.2L • 5-spd • 165k miles • 0-60: yes'98 SC Riviera • 281k miles • 298 HP/370 TQ • 0-60: 5.79s • ET: 13.97 @ 99.28 • 4087 lb • 20.1 avg MPG • Nelson Ledges Lap: 1:30 3.4" pulley • AL104 plugs • 180º t-stat • FWI w/K&N • 1.9:1 rockers • OR pushrods • LS6 valve springs • SLP headers • ZZP fuel rails KYB GR2 struts • MaxAir shocks • Addco sway bars • UMI bushings • GM STB • Enkei 18" EV5s w/ Dunlop DZ101s • F-body calipers EBC bluestuff/Hawk HP plus • SS lines • Brembo slotted discs • DHP tuned • Aeroforce • Hidden Hitch^^^ SOLD ^^^ '70 Ninety-Eight Holiday Coupe 455cid • 116k miles^^^ SOLD ^^^ | |

| Yeah I would try to scan it before you throw more money at it. There are so many different things it could be. Could you post a video of you trying to start the car? I am curious to hear it trying to start. Could you also list what has been done or replaced recently on the car? That way we can check off things that it could be. How many miles are on the car? _________________ 1998 Supercharged Riviera - Custom CAI, Alpine spx-13ref, Infinity 6x9's, Alpine 4 Channel Amp, Kicker KX3, Silverstars, STB, Hawk Brake Pads, Monroe Air Shocks, KYB GR2

| 99 grand prix had a bad maf at work, no codes. Some fail only partially, where the car will die at certain rpms and stay running at others. That was the case with the grand prix and no DTCs were ever set. | |

I was planning on driving it for awhile and repaint/ body work it and try and get $2,000 for it.

| Now you're closer to fixing this problem. The MAF sensor shouldn't have anything to do with starting your car. Start with the basics - fuel and spark. Find out why those wires don't have spark! _________________ '05 GTO 6.0L • 6-spd • 95k miles • 0-60: 4.8s • 16.9 avg MPG • Nelson Ledges Lap: 1:26'95 Celica GT 2.2L • 5-spd • 165k miles • 0-60: yes'98 SC Riviera • 281k miles • 298 HP/370 TQ • 0-60: 5.79s • ET: 13.97 @ 99.28 • 4087 lb • 20.1 avg MPG • Nelson Ledges Lap: 1:30 3.4" pulley • AL104 plugs • 180º t-stat • FWI w/K&N • 1.9:1 rockers • OR pushrods • LS6 valve springs • SLP headers • ZZP fuel rails KYB GR2 struts • MaxAir shocks • Addco sway bars • UMI bushings • GM STB • Enkei 18" EV5s w/ Dunlop DZ101s • F-body calipers EBC bluestuff/Hawk HP plus • SS lines • Brembo slotted discs • DHP tuned • Aeroforce • Hidden Hitch^^^ SOLD ^^^ '70 Ninety-Eight Holiday Coupe 455cid • 116k miles^^^ SOLD ^^^ | |

| Sounds good guys. Thanks a ton for the help. I can do a tune up on it and see if it'll run. How can I get to the plugs and wires on the other side? | |

| If your not getting spark, check your IGN fuse (10 amp), if it is blown, it could be that your Ignition Module needs to be replaced. | |

| well I am getting spark. The engine turns over, sometimes it will start but will run like crap for a few secs then die. I tested the wires with a screwdriver and 2 did not spark. Also I ran some B12 in the tank beforehand so maybe the plugs are fouling. I'll check it further probably after the weekend. if it was the CPS it wouldn't run at all, not even for a second am I correct? | |

You would think so, but this was also the case with the gp i was talking about. It wouldnt start with the MAF plugged in. Im not saying this is whats going on with his car cause im not there, but with him sprayin the MAF with carb cleaner, thats where id start.

| If the MAF were somehow causing this, I'd unplug it and try starting the car. If the situation improves, that's the problem. Easy test. Btw, should see the SES lamp when you unplug the MAF. Make sure you have a way to reset it. _________________ '05 GTO 6.0L • 6-spd • 95k miles • 0-60: 4.8s • 16.9 avg MPG • Nelson Ledges Lap: 1:26'95 Celica GT 2.2L • 5-spd • 165k miles • 0-60: yes'98 SC Riviera • 281k miles • 298 HP/370 TQ • 0-60: 5.79s • ET: 13.97 @ 99.28 • 4087 lb • 20.1 avg MPG • Nelson Ledges Lap: 1:30 3.4" pulley • AL104 plugs • 180º t-stat • FWI w/K&N • 1.9:1 rockers • OR pushrods • LS6 valve springs • SLP headers • ZZP fuel rails KYB GR2 struts • MaxAir shocks • Addco sway bars • UMI bushings • GM STB • Enkei 18" EV5s w/ Dunlop DZ101s • F-body calipers EBC bluestuff/Hawk HP plus • SS lines • Brembo slotted discs • DHP tuned • Aeroforce • Hidden Hitch^^^ SOLD ^^^ '70 Ninety-Eight Holiday Coupe 455cid • 116k miles^^^ SOLD ^^^ | |

| ... series one. Doesn't usually like to be started with no MAF. No MAP to fall back on. - lo619 wrote:

You say you are getting spark, and then a sentence later say you tested the wires with a screwdriver and 2 did not spark. Which is it? Coil pack could be dead, or ICM problem. _________________

| In that case, I stand corrected. With the MAF being the critical component for starting and running the engine, I'd think that's more reason the SES should illuminate if not functioning correctly. _________________ '05 GTO 6.0L • 6-spd • 95k miles • 0-60: 4.8s • 16.9 avg MPG • Nelson Ledges Lap: 1:26'95 Celica GT 2.2L • 5-spd • 165k miles • 0-60: yes'98 SC Riviera • 281k miles • 298 HP/370 TQ • 0-60: 5.79s • ET: 13.97 @ 99.28 • 4087 lb • 20.1 avg MPG • Nelson Ledges Lap: 1:30 3.4" pulley • AL104 plugs • 180º t-stat • FWI w/K&N • 1.9:1 rockers • OR pushrods • LS6 valve springs • SLP headers • ZZP fuel rails KYB GR2 struts • MaxAir shocks • Addco sway bars • UMI bushings • GM STB • Enkei 18" EV5s w/ Dunlop DZ101s • F-body calipers EBC bluestuff/Hawk HP plus • SS lines • Brembo slotted discs • DHP tuned • Aeroforce • Hidden Hitch^^^ SOLD ^^^ '70 Ninety-Eight Holiday Coupe 455cid • 116k miles^^^ SOLD ^^^ | |
