Teflon Coating is coming off the supercharger rotors. Empty
PostSubject: Teflon Coating is coming off the supercharger rotors.   Teflon Coating is coming off the supercharger rotors. EmptyMon May 02, 2011 4:01 pm

When i did my head gaskets on my motor i noticed on the rotors that the black teflon coating was chipping off, I don't know what that will do to the S/C but i do believe its important. I'm not sure but could this be linked to one of my other problems.

Which is when i accelerate up a hill or on an incline my motor seems to have a misfire on cylinder 3.
i have already replace the Spark plugs twice and i replaced the wires twice i've checked the coil packs and they are fine i've checked the ignition module and i have constantly cleared the codes from the computer and i have replaced the Crankshaft position sensor.
this so called messed up misfire has caused a lot of problems for me.

Also i have a leak in my trunk thats holding water in the spare tire area, and a lot of it too like at least 2-3 gallons of just water. the leak starts around the gas tank tube area when you take out the carpet i know this because there is rust around that area but i dont know how to fix it cuz there is gas right there and if i weld it i have to take out the gas tank obviously. IF anyone else has had a problem with this that will be really helpful

IF anyone has any knowledge it will be really helpful.

Welcome detroiter91. I'm sure we'll see some opinions soon. Please feel free to start a new topic in the Exterior forum regarding your trunk water issue.

You say you "checked" the coil packs. did you swap them and see if the cyl 3 misfire changed to a different cylinder?

As for the Teflon coating, without it you will produce less boost and the supercharger will not run as efficiently. as far as i know there is no way to recoat the rotors. Maybe magnuson can sell you a new set of rotors.

A specialist who rebuild these S/C,s for a living told me,"it cant hurt anything!" and it wont. the amount of boost lost on account of the Teflon peeling off is negligible.

Yeah, when i got my Reman SC from Cardone they actually strip the teflon off the rotors and leave it off. When I called them about the variation in boost, he did acknowledge the fact that some performance would be lost. I simply countered the lack of teflon with a 2.4" pulley instead of a 2.5". Since I plan on eventually going to meth injection the teflon is better off gone. I wouldn't worry about the flaking doing any real harm.

My only question would be, what year is the car.
Flaking on anything up to a 97 isn't really a prob, though not really desirable, just a bit of lost boost(as long as the flakes stay out of the valves. usually its ok)

If its a 98+ my question would be what is making them flake, as its actually quite rare for those to flake even when spraying meth in the intake. Anything from extreme heat damage to a blown valve getting up there and gouging can cause it.

^^ Why a difference from 98+ and not 96 or 97 too Karma???

The thing here is.... If you're dropping pulley sizes to add more boost, you're creating more parasitic loss on the motor and system. Thus making the motor work harder. These blowers are only efficient to a certain point and then dropping sizes on pulleys becomes a waste of time.

That said... a few nicks here and there in the teflon coating isn't a huge deal. But if you strip all of it from the rotors... that's not great. If it's a Gen III M90, you probably lose 1-2psi. A Gen V probably loses more because of the tight tolerances within the housing and rotors. I'm not sure what differences you see in M62 blowers.

Eaton changed the coating slightly for the years of 98+, .. well, in reality, they changed the process for applying the coating so it adheres better to the metal of the rotor, making it more resistant to peeling.  And the change actually took place somewhere in the 97 year, so its more accurate to just say that all 98+ had the new process.  The GenV saw both the improved application process and the improved coating material.

IIRC for the'98 model (mid-'97 changeover) they switched to an epoxy coating on the rotors.

Ah, Eaton won't really tell what it is. The only coating that was for sure confirmed by them was the epoxy coating and it came on the 95 m62's and some ford m90s. Anything in a riv that is an m90 was the next version secret coating which stayed till being replaced by the new GenV coating. The change that happed mid 97 was originally thought to be a new coating since it adhered better, but when pressed Eaton said they had only changed the application process.

For coatings the epoxy coating was only useful as a spacer to make up for machining flaws to close the tolerances. Once the supercharger got its break-in, the high points were worn off leaving the close rotor fit. The expoxy coating looks yellow when clean. The next coating used was rumored to be a Teflon/epoxy mix of some type and looks greyish black when clean. The genV coating is supposed to "wear into itself" like a self sealing tire to improve efficency and has a texture that is almost fuzzy'ish and is very black when clean.

Anyway... thats all I remember from my past travels of the Eaton forums!
