ok hears a step by step on how to paint engine parts. im doing the heads for my Series 2. but it should be about the same for each part.
Step One: remove the part from the engine
Step Two: get the parts sparkly clean. i used Advance auto parts engine
degreaser , and some tuff stuff. i also used an old toothbrush, and a wire tooth brush thing.
Step Three: after you clean everything up, now go over the part with a scuffing pad like a scotch brite or something like that.
Step Four : Let the parts dry, in the sun
Step Five : If there still greasey, then go back to Step 2 and do it over there good.
Step Six : If the parts are ready for paint then its time to prep them go over them with a Dupli-color prep wipe, or rubbing alcohol . use some paint thinner, or acetone to get then real clean
Step Seven : Time to mask. you don't want to paint to mess up ur valves, or your rockers, . so what I did for the Heads, i balled up some paper, and put it inside the exhaust port. then i taped off the bolts, and last i put on a old junker valve cover that im not going to use.
*Duct tape works great on the intake runners*Step Eight : Now its time for Primer . im going to use Dupli-color Engine Enamel Primer (DE1612). Make sure it will handle up to at least 500*.Now shake that can for a full minute .SHAKE IT LIKE YOU MEAN IT. then start spraying hold the can straight and go with light coats, remeber its better to have 3 light coats then one heavy one. apply all coats with in 1 hour making sure you give a 10 minute flash time(time to dry/cure in between coats)
Step Nine : If ur happy with the Primer stage then its time for Paint. I used Engine Enamel Chrysler red(DE1632). they didnt have a GM red. and it will match my paint after we paint the car. Again go with light coats, you dont want to run the paint. do 3 coats of paint or until happy with it
Step Ten : Time for clear. I didnt use the clear. but its the same as the paint and the primer. use the Engine Enamel rated for up to 500*
Step Eleven : Let everything dry, don't touch it, don't play with it leave it alone. Dupli-color says it can be handled with in 3 hours. i would say wait 4 just to make it safe.
Step 12: your DONE
Side notes. if its humid it will turn out different, it will take longer to dry, ect.
your doing this on ur own if you F**K up ur parts its not my problem and i will not be held responsible .good luck with the project.Use old valve covers that you dont mind that gets messed up
Finished now let her dry, then i can start on the LIM and the valve covers
