| I'm having the same problem with my '97. Did you diagnose the problem with this? I assumed it was the sending unit. | |

| BTW, if you pull the fuel canister you will prolly need a new one of these: http://198.208.187.182/internet/PartImage.jsp?mfgname=ACDELCO&prodlinecd=43&acpartnbr=TR7 Mine was rusted away. Also, the level sensor part number is: http://198.208.187.182/internet/PartImage.jsp?mfgname=ACDELCO&prodlinecd=43&acpartnbr=TR7 They are 100+ from part stores. But check ebay for a better deal. GM uses the same set up on many cars. The only difference is the float which I think is just snapped on. | |

| Alright so I've noticed that my gas gauge slowly creeps down to 1/2 tank and then drops like a rock. What causes this?
From what I understand there is a float on the fuel pump that sits in the tank and registers on a variable resistor which then feeds the instrument panel cluster. Am I way off? For some reason I've just been thinking about this for the past few days.
What would need to be done to increase the accuracy of it?

| Subject: Fuel Gage reads empty all the time. Wed Jul 23, 2008 5:46 pm | |
| My '97 S/C Riv's fuel gage just started doing this and I don't want to tear up the trunk unless I have to. No matter how much gas I put in the tank, the gage always reads on 'E' with the light on. It jumps up from the resting position when started but won't go above the 'E'. Anyone have any ideas? I thought it was the sending unit but the problems described on that thread all seemed like erratic activity. Mine stays put. Any advice or ideas will be appreciated. | |

| Sounds like a broken wire. Some wiring diagnostic will be required. Best starting point is to probe into the sending wire near the tank and see what the resistance to ground is, and what the gauge does if you ground the wire. | |

| Ok, I filled my tank last night with a 93 octane and the gage moved! It says full and seems to be acting normally (it wasn't on empty within the 3 miles it took to get home.) I've dealt with problems like this with my musical equipment before and it's always a wire. | |

| Most likely it's the wiper on the sender that reads the resistance. One way to check if it's the gauge or the sender is to find the correct wires on the connector at the tank and substitute resistors in for the values of empty, half and full. If all those work properly on the gauge, then the issue is typically the sender. | |

| Try some techron plus. It cleans the sulpher from the contacts of the sending unit. | |

| I use it. Others will rave about how well it works. I don't know how well it works except that I don't have any fuel related problems... I put in a big (20gal) bottle every 6 months or so. | |

| $110 in the tank and it says half full, a blind guy could tell thats inconsistant with reality! it will then fly to full after a few days and act as normal, fall back to half and stay there until it shows the warning light. I need answers as to why its off or if i need to replace | |

| Cheer up.. you have a secret hatch in your trunk and can pull the sender easily.
Bonnies have no hatch. However I'd suggest what others have mentioned..try a bottle of techtron cleaner. You might have varnish on your sender.
