| Yep, it would stay on, go off, not start, start, Start flashing. It was pretty inexpensive. I got a #7 key made and solved my issues. It was like $20 at my local flea market. I must add it was a generic key with a chip not GM. You can bypass it with resistors or I believe an aftermarket alarm would solve it because they bypass the VATS. You can almost look at the chip on the key and notice it being worn or the chip itself gets loose | |

| Update: some of the cheaper Bluetooth scanners won't read bcm code as stated above...Software by Autoenginuity does offer software with a GM module for about $500...must use your own laptop... Anybody have any experience with this setup? | |

| Abaddon, a coworker had a matco otc code reader with the GM module..We scanned the Riv today...no active code..one historical code..from the icp..it was code 38 VART Data Loss

Security light behavior has not changed.. Still stays on for about 1-2 minutes then goes out. Still no issues starting etc.
You recognize this code?

You recognize this code? It's UART, not VART (LOL vart....). UART is the data line. I'm not quite sure what that scanner is trying to say. That's the problem with aftermarket scanners. They don't or cannot translate manufacturer specific codes. There is no "36" in a trouble code. The UART codes in the Riv are B0037 and B0038 as far as the IPC is concerned. Yes, it's possible that whatever code that scanner is showing is related to your problem (which would actually be B0038 UART A SDL Fault). B0038 is directly related to broken or frayed wire on the comm line. We've seen this code a few times for a bad Ignition Cylinder or something like that, but usually the Security light stays on and doesn't go out. Now, don't go and start replacing ignition parts. It's hard to say at all what's causing your problem. We do know though, that the Security light is directly related to the Ignition Cylinder, the key, and the BCM. Right now, there isn't enough evidence of anything to start replacing stuff.

| Sorry about the VART vs UART,..just looked at the photo wrong...coworker was holding scanner. Could a worn key cause this code 38 UART Data Loss? | |

Could a worn key cause this code 38 UART Data Loss? S'ok. I was more poking fun at the word VART rather than how you referred to it.... A worn key, or more so a worn chip could cause your concern.
