Riviera 97 SC high fuel consumption? Empty
PostSubject: Riviera 97 SC high fuel consumption?   Riviera 97 SC high fuel consumption? EmptySun Dec 02, 2007 11:17 am

Hello all!

My girlfriend drives her 1997 Riviera SC to work everyday, its about 2miles trip. When it was summer fuel consumption wasnt a big problem, but now (we live in Finland and its about 23F outhere), this black beauty (no not my girlfriend lmao ) started to eat major gas. I don't know, but it seems high at 13mpg, while factory rating is 17mpg/city for SC Riv. ??? I suspect thermostat or coolant temp sensor, cause it warms up real slow. You know the gas its expensive in here, at $7,7/gallon!!!

Also question; is cooling fans supposed to spin even when engine is cold?

thanks !

13mpg seems about right for such short trips in the cold. My GF gets 14.5 in her regal GS on a 4 mile trip, city only, similar temps. It was a bit higher last year, but I recently put in a wix filter and it dropped.

Check for hidden vacuum leaks.

I don't suspect the car would have time to fully warm up and generate substantial heat in 2 miles. There is no info re: your car's maintenance history or mileage but if you have neglected the cooling system, you should flush it out and backflush the heater core. Inspect the t-stat while you're at it (maybe replace it with a 180 deg... if you plan on doing a few modifications down the road). R&R if necessary.

The fans should normally not come on until your engine is very hot, but may spin when the AC is on. Try starting the car with the AC off.

23mpg? hmm I guess it would do that, if driven a little more than 2miles trips!

Well, thanks for good info anyway!

I usually get 15 mpg in warmed up city driving. short trips like 2 mi I could see 13 as normal.

Fans are most likely related to A/C being on.

Good luck!
