Voltage Light On Empty
PostSubject: Voltage Light On   Voltage Light On EmptyWed Dec 19, 2007 8:43 pm

I was driving from work today when my voltage light came on and then about a quarter mile after the light came on my car shut down on me, My buddy gave me a hotshot, the car started for a couple of mintues and died on me. again I think I need a new alternator. Every time I put the key in the ignition the car just makes a clicking noise.

Clicking noise is because your battery is dead. Battery is dead because 1) Alternator is bad, or 2) Wires are unplugged from alternator. Check that 3-wire plug is connected. If so, get the alternator checked and replace if needed.

If you have a three wire setup, the pcm will set the light on a couple different conditions.

If the alternator stops putting out
If the third wire does not sense enough voltage from the vehicle

Dead battery would cause the second.. bad alternator would cause the first. Question is.. which happened first.. chicken or egg?

That's because your alternator is not working. You need to charge the battery. That's what the alternator does, it charges your batter while the engine is running. No alternator = really really dead battery.

Ok now that I got the new alternator and battery in the car it's another problem, My car has been sitting for 3 weeks. I think I need some dry gas the car will crank over when I put my foot on the acclerator, but when I release my foot off the accelrator the car goes dead.

Shouldn't need to give it gas to start. Seems like a fueling issue.

PostSubject: Re: Voltage Light On   Voltage Light On EmptyFri Jan 04, 2008 11:05 pm

EGR wouldn't cause it to start or not. I don't exactly understand the starting problem though.

by 'crank over' do you mean run without the starter? Or 'crank' with the starter turning the engine?

Are you saying it will not crank (starter) unless you are also pressing the gas pedal? Or it will only run while your foot is on the gas? Could be an IAC (idle air control motor) if it starts but will only stay running with your foot on the gas.

Need more clarification...

We're here to help each other, and that includes you, but I am concerned that the help you're getting is frustrating you much more than it is helping you. You are getting a lot of sincere and generous advice, but how it all fits together is puzzling to me.

Why do you think it might be the EGR?
