PostSubject: supercharger whine   supercharger whine EmptyWed Jul 23, 2008 10:22 pm

Hey im sorry for my numerous posts lately, but after i repair my car i want to drastically increase the volume of the whine of the supercharger. i want people to hear it coming from a ways away. i have just a stock car with a gutted airbox. Got any ideas? thanks

An FWI of 4" will make some noise... A ported supercharger will make it louder still. A GenV supercharger sounds just awesome! But it's a bit more work...

I would not recommend dropping pulley sizes with just a gutted airbox for mods. A purely stock setup can still have existing KR, a smaller pulley will make it worse.

No way to know w/o scanning for KR. Like Derek said, your best route would be to open up the intake with a 4" FWI and cone K&N in the FW. Also remove the big plastic shield over the engine. Pull the weatherstrip off the back of the engine bay. It'll let hot air out of the bay, and maybe a bit more whine.

It is a length of rubber seal that runs across the top/back side of the engine bay, sealing against the underside of the closed hood. It will just lift right off the steel ridge it sits on. Removal should help allow hot eng compartment air to pass out the back of the hood when you're moving. I'd keep it though, don't toss it out.

The sound won't really change, just the sound level, specifically on hard acceleration, but at idle also, esp with your window open, as the FWI is right by your door. A smaller pulley, when you can safely run one, will add some volume too since the SC will be running at higher rpm's.

FWI seems about 50% louder than gutted box, and maybe double the sound level of stock. Remember that the GTP is not as well insulated, so the noise is a bit softer in a Riv with windows up, but roll them down... from outside it's just as loud:

the stock intake is a FWI wink

I reckon you could use the stock hose as part of it but it's simply not long enough to make it through the fender well. You would need to add hard tubing to it no matter what and really the whole point is to make the intake better than the stock so why do it? You know what I mean jellybean?

Yep, https://rivperformance.editboard.com/series-ii-engine-transmission-f4/write-up-modified-air-box-cai-t1289.htm

I would say it's half FWI and half CAI, reason being that CAIs use an air box, while FWIs do not.

PostSubject: S/C whine question   supercharger whine EmptyWed Jul 30, 2008 2:05 am

Perhaps this is a dumb question but what really makes the whine that the superchargers do make oh so much? Is there any particular reason why one time driving the car it sounds particularly boosty (As in the S/C whines with the slightest provocation of the gas pedal a bit much) and other times much quieter?

a combination of the air opening and RPM. The air opening is controlled by the vacuum boost bypass valve, which opens according to how much you are stepping on the gas.

Or are you more interested in the physics of how each rotor opening generates a little whoomping sound as it passes the opening that when combined with 5000 RPM makes such sweet music? smile

Have you ever heard an air raid/tornado warning siren? Blowers and sirens share a lot of the same things, but while superchargers are designed to push air into the engine, sirens are designed to push air out of a horn, as sound. Blowers and sirens are different, but the same type of thing is happening in both. If you could listen to a blower from the manifold side, it would be pretty f'n loud.

Like Derek said, the bypass is controlled by vacuum, which is indicative of engine load. If engine load increases while in OD with the TCC locked, as in going up a hill, you can have significant boost at very low (1500) RPM.

Weather and air density also have a bearing on the amount of sound.

agree engine temp plays a part too. cold start-up and 200* coolant sounds like 2 different engines, and the whine pitch and rpm changes too.
it also depends on where you drive and what the sound can reverberate off of. i love driving next to a wall on the driver side, let the car get into 3rd gear and romp on the peddle making the s/c scream but letting off right before the downshift twisted

In high school auto when we were doing superchargers, we hooked an m90 up to the alternator tester to spin it. It was actually part of the lab. The sound that came out of it was much louder than the whine. It was a very low sound actually, kind of like a propeller aircraft engine at low rpm. But ya if you have the blower off the manifold, that sound is entirely different.

didn't you weld shut you silencers on your ported superairphucker? did it make a differance?
