| i was out taking stuff to my storage unit in preparation for moving this Wednesday. i started the car, put it in reverse, and noticed a noise that sounded like a really bad s/c coupler...only a lot louder. switched gears to see if it would go away. nope. here is where my diagnoses started: I popped the hood and noticed the noise was coming from the passenger side, everything looked intact (pulleys, tensioners, belts). i limped it home about 2 miles and noticed the noise would go away if i was giving it throttle above ~1500rpm. i didnt drive hard to see what would happen at WOT, but as long as i kept my foot on the throttle when stopped it wouldn't make the sound. but if i let it slip down to 1000rpm or lower (idle) the horrible rattleng comes back. i got home ok and took off all the idlers and tensioner i could. all are in great shape. i pulled off the s/c belt and rant he car to eliminate that. it still rattles. a/c or no a/c it still does it. my PS pump and WP are both less than 2 years old. so that leave what? harmonic balancer. i am going to take a video of it and post it up in a few minuites. any and all help is apreciated. i really cant afford a new engine, but it sounds like something serious broke. no SES, no noticable driveability problem, no symptoms untill today when it stated making the noise. thank you. | wouldn't i be able to feel a broken timing chain? oil is good, i've changed it every 3k or LESS since i got it 5+ yrs ago. and the oil right now only has ~2100 miles. looks good with no coolant in it, and no oil in the coolant too. plus i dont think an engine can run without a timing chain/belt _________________ 1996 with 254k miles, L32 4" FWI -> ported N* -> Ported Gen V w/3.0" Pulley, Stage 3 Phenolic I/C, ZZP FMHE, 1.84 RR, Headers and 3" pipe to mufflers, F-body brakes, and lowered on Eibachs. -RIP AMG C400 White on black. | possible that the timing chain is stretched and hopped a tooth... but I doubt it.
One reason I hate the lack of an oil pressure gauge. I think its absolutely necessary for any car.

| Have you tried running the engine with no belts at all and seeing if the noise is still there?
That could eliminate any pullies/accessories being the problem.

| just listened to the video again on better speakers... it could really be anything. Pull the other belt and check all your pullies too... make sure the water pump and PS pump spin okay... PS pump has fluid in it? etc... | |

| ok i just ran it w/out both belts (thanks for the suggestion Tony) didnt make any noise, but it wouldnt idle lower than 1000rpm b/c i coulnt get it warmed up. (started smelling burnt rubber b/c i cant get both belts tucked away without them touching the crank.) anyways, the tensions for the acc works great, the alt pulley spins well, and so does the WP pulley. however the PS pump pulley stops as soon as i let go of it. is that b/c of resistance in the pump, or what? the bearing do not feel rough, and it doesnt wobble.
one more thing, the harmonic balancer does wobble a little bit. is this normal? i dont see it with the belts on, but when they are off, i can see maybe a mm or 2 of movement on the edge. and should the outer ring of the balencer move seperate from the center? thank you guy so far for helping me out. _________________ 1996 with 254k miles, L32 4" FWI -> ported N* -> Ported Gen V w/3.0" Pulley, Stage 3 Phenolic I/C, ZZP FMHE, 1.84 RR, Headers and 3" pipe to mufflers, F-body brakes, and lowered on Eibachs. -RIP AMG C400 White on black. | ok so i ran it again with both belts off, and it still makes noise! not as rapid, but if i give it throttle and let off (rpms drop below 1k) i hear a bad knock/rattle that can be felt through the engine. so it is definatly either engine internals or balancer. though the noise is much worse when the belts are on, maybe b/c there is tension on the balancer?? someone on another forum suggested broken flex plate. thoughts? _________________ 1996 with 254k miles, L32 4" FWI -> ported N* -> Ported Gen V w/3.0" Pulley, Stage 3 Phenolic I/C, ZZP FMHE, 1.84 RR, Headers and 3" pipe to mufflers, F-body brakes, and lowered on Eibachs. -RIP AMG C400 White on black. | I'm thinking the balancer. It shouldn't move and I think it's pretty well known for the rubber to go bad in them.
It could be flex plate but the sound is coming from the wrong end of the motor!!

| any way to be sure it is the balancer? and can anyone remember the size socket needed to remove it? last time i had it off to replace my CKP sensor i used a whole tube of thread lock on the main bolt...kinda regretting that now. hopefully i havent done any internal damage so far, i am guessing it would not be wise to run it at all now? _________________ 1996 with 254k miles, L32 4" FWI -> ported N* -> Ported Gen V w/3.0" Pulley, Stage 3 Phenolic I/C, ZZP FMHE, 1.84 RR, Headers and 3" pipe to mufflers, F-body brakes, and lowered on Eibachs. -RIP AMG C400 White on black. | sounds like my car... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWDYSE_uD90 so i'm thinking flex plate or balancer. i am going to try and find a crack on the plate before i go spending money. _________________ 1996 with 254k miles, L32 4" FWI -> ported N* -> Ported Gen V w/3.0" Pulley, Stage 3 Phenolic I/C, ZZP FMHE, 1.84 RR, Headers and 3" pipe to mufflers, F-body brakes, and lowered on Eibachs. -RIP AMG C400 White on black.
