| I have been told that the 95 riv is a OBD 1.5.....whats that mean? Can I use a OBDII scanner? Where is the port? Will that paperclip trick from the OBD1's work? | |

| unfortunately, OBD 1.5 means neither will work, and you need a special scan tool. | |

| I've always thought '95 Rivs were OBDI. The plug in port should be in the lower dash, under and left of the steering wheel, not far from the p-brake pedal. _________________ '05 GTO 6.0L • 6-spd • 95k miles • 0-60: 4.8s • 16.9 avg MPG • Nelson Ledges Lap: 1:26'95 Celica GT 2.2L • 5-spd • 165k miles • 0-60: yes'98 SC Riviera • 281k miles • 298 HP/370 TQ • 0-60: 5.79s • ET: 13.97 @ 99.28 • 4087 lb • 20.1 avg MPG • Nelson Ledges Lap: 1:30 3.4" pulley • AL104 plugs • 180º t-stat • FWI w/K&N • 1.9:1 rockers • OR pushrods • LS6 valve springs • SLP headers • ZZP fuel rails KYB GR2 struts • MaxAir shocks • Addco sway bars • UMI bushings • GM STB • Enkei 18" EV5s w/ Dunlop DZ101s • F-body calipers EBC bluestuff/Hawk HP plus • SS lines • Brembo slotted discs • DHP tuned • Aeroforce • Hidden Hitch^^^ SOLD ^^^ '70 Ninety-Eight Holiday Coupe 455cid • 116k miles^^^ SOLD ^^^ | |

| My '94 Regal wouldn't accept any normal OBD-I or OBD-II scanners either. That's when I first learned of OBD-1.5 Some companies make OBD-II scanners with a special adapter cable for this, but it was going to cost me around $500 and I decided it wasn't worth persuing, at that point I took my immediate problem to a shop who had the appropriate computer and paid them to tell me what was wrong with it. Much cheaper at the time. I never figured out how to scan that car. | |

| I went to autozone, and they dont have a 1.5 scanner......only OBD 1 and 2......what kind of shop did you go to? Was it a local repair shop or a dealer? | |

| the 95 is really obd1.5, in that the computer is obd1 but the connector is obd2.
For a scanner you really just need a normal scanner that has a obd2 plug, but that will still also do obd1. I use the Actron CP9145... got it off amazon for around 90 bucks CAD, should be cheaper for those in states as you won't pay as much shipping or border duty.
hrm, looks to have gone up in price abit: http://www.amazon.com/Actron-CP9145-AutoScanner-Diagnostic-Capability/dp/B00020BM2S/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=automotive&qid=1234121877&sr=8-1
functionality is limited when scanning obd1, mostly just lets you see the critical data, but not change anything or record runs or anything... _________________

| in short, yes. However, don't quote me that any OBD1 will for sure work on the 95, its an odd year. So things are a little hit and miss for scaning it. _________________ | |

| Looks pretty much the same except for the plastic divider between the pins.....is that the only difference? If so then I could see how this would work......I cant believe a place like autozone doesnt have a scanner for something like this.....it was raining at the time, the lazy ass probably just didnt wanna get wet.
Im afraid to drive the car without finding out what the problem is first.

| the OBD2 has rounded corners and the sides are angled. the pinout is also different.

| most auto shops should have a scanner that will scan both. Basically any scanner that has a cable that can be switched on and off, one for obd1 and one for obd2 will work to scan the car. If you ever plan on modding the car though, it is vital to get your own scanner like the one I posted a link on on the first page. The series one can be fussy, and there is not the option to just tune away engine knock like on the series one. _________________ | |

| The paperclip trick only works on true OBD1, at least when I tried it didn't work on the '94 Regal... I'd done that for code-reading for many GM cars before and was befuddled by it not working in the Regal, which is how I discovered about the OBD-1.5 thing. | |
