| I found a 1997 Riviera at a local dealer with 88,000 original miles...nice car.
He is asking $3995 and won't come down...too much? Should I keep looking??
I had wanted a Riviera for a couple of years and just starting to get serious.
Thanks for any and all input

| If it is loaded with all the options and is in excellent condition, the price is very good. Any maintenance history or previous owner history.? What State did it live in, down south or up north.? | |

| That's a fair price if the car is in good shape. Can you take it to an independent mechanic for an evaluation? | |

| If the car is in very good shape, that is a perfectly acceptable price. I paid $7300 for mine 5 years ago @ 69,000 miles... Remember, whenever you're buying from a dealer, certain tests and replacements have to occur that a private party doesn't have to worry about.
Brake linings, tire treads, even LOF are checked, along with electrical problems that a dealer has to fix if he expects the car to sell at retail. Mine even steam cleaned the engine between my visits...

Mine even steam cleaned the engine between my visits... That depends on the State you are buying the car in. In MA, for instance they must provide you with a vehicle that will pass the state mandated safety inspection. That has it's own particular list of things. But, go one State north to N.H. and a dealer can sell you a car without an inspection sticker and can deny you a test drive off their lot without the sticker if they choose. Basically selling you an wholesale vehicle for retail price. Personally had that experience in the past six months when we were looking for a replacement SUV for the G/F. Had no clue that their laws allowed it, but after some homework I found it to be true and chose not to buy from that dealer. He wanted to sell on a wholesale basis (no test drive) for a Retail Price and it was legal.

| Interesting, Rick...
I can't deny the plethora of individual state rules, that's one of the things that people DO want on Health Care, for example - National insurance rules, instead of state-by-state.
In the case of this particular New Hampshire experience, (state motto: Live Free or Cheap,) I would quote an absolute rule: If they won't let you try it, tell 'em you ain't gonnal buy it!
