Subject: 1999 Riviera Cup Holder Removal. Fri Jan 29, 2016 4:55 pm
I have a 1999 Riviera with a broken cup holder. I believe the spring is broken and just needs a replacement. Does anyone know how to access the cup holder or remove the surrounding items (cd storage, ash tray) to access it?
Thanks, Tyler

Here is a link to the instructions to remove it ...
There are instructions on page one and page four of that write with service manual diagrams. It is a pretty simple removal, just follow the instructions.
Good luck,

Thanks, I was able to remove the cd storage and ash tray. Does anyone know how the cup holder mechanism works? The lid can be manually brought back up, but then falls when you let go? Am I possibly missing a component such as a spring?

Yes there is a spring underneath that pulls the door back to you. There is also a dmall arm at the back that 'latches' the arm in place when you push it back.
Then, when you give it a slight push again it 'unlatches' and the spring pulls it closed.

Is there any way to fix that? Could you tell what was broken on mine?

Sorry, I didnt realize it was a video. Looks like the latch is working correctly, just needs a spring. I wouldnt be able to give you any specs on what sort of spring except i got mine at the hardware store, for like $1. It's a longer, fairly low tension spring. It will make more sense if you are able to remove the entire cupholder area, which as 99rivmam mentioned, is described in those write-up pages.

Ok thanks. So one I've removed the console, I should be able to find where the spring belongs and just reassemble?

Yes exactly. Maybe get a few different springs to see what works best. Some may spring back too quickly, some may not be strong enough to do anything.
