Ugh! Need Transmission Help Empty
PostSubject: Ugh! Need Transmission Help   Ugh! Need Transmission Help EmptyFri Feb 08, 2008 4:20 pm

So I've been having problems with my car for a while, but recently some new problems have surfaced.

It has about 128,000 miles. Recently seafoamed.

1) I was recently driving down the interstate and my RPMs were at 4 and I wasn't speeding up.

2) While driving on the interstate in cruise control, my car will speed up the RPMs on its own, however the MPH don't go up.

3) Rough idle. Also, the car doesn't roll forward or backward at all while in idle.

4)Feels sluggish..I have to floor it to make it go anywhere. Car doesn't really feel like it accelerates off a complete stop. Also doesn't feel like it has a 1st gear.

I LOVE my car and don't want to see it go..but has anyone had the same experiences, or anyone know of anything I can do besides spending tons of money to replace the tranny.

check the vac lines at the base of the intake manifold under the sc snout. Sounds like you have a split.

I just checked the vacuum lines. I could only find one..and it looked fine.

The transmission fluid is dark brown..do you think putting clean fluid in would fix the problem?

Change it (not flush) as soon as possible. Trust me, it's your only hope.

CEL present ?

If you have no 1st or 4th available AND the trans shifts 2nd to 3rd by itself in D or OD and locks the converter:
verify shift solenoid (I think it's an easy fix in the pan.) Either that or a wiring problem from the PCM to the trans ( or PCM itself... but very rare).

I agree, it sounds like time to plan for a new trans.

What year is your car? (Gives us the trans model)

did you have a CEL (check engine light ) ?

this goes for everyone that posts with tech problems. It's getting a bit out of hand lately. You have to answer the questions of people trying to help you. The 1st step will be to diagnose the problem. always give year/mileage/mods and what you have done to diagnose the problem. Detailed symptoms (like in this post) really help. Always mention CE/SES lights and any and all stored DTCs.

also, after you have addressed or fixed the problem, report back and post about the fix you used. It will save time in the future when people use the search function. If ever they discover there is one.

I understand Jason's frustration. When asking technical questions, it's a good idea to create a signature. It only takes a few seconds to do; could save you days in getting help for your problem. See link:

Does "I could only find one vacuum line" mean the rest are missing? There are a number of htem.

You may need to get a service manual.

Why don't you get one from a yard and replace it? These transmissions have a reputation of holding together for a while so get a slightly used one and do a swap. If you can't do it yourself, visit a smaller shop... those turn out to be better sometimes and a hell of alot cheaper. Especially if it's a shop used to doing a little custom work.

When I was shopping around for a new trans, Ed Morad had a couple with 80-100k in the $350 range.

I tried looking for a used tranny on websites but was unable to find one. Also, Ed Morad didn't have one.

Can anyone help me with this?

Kenny, are you SC'd?

I am NO tranny expert but you need a 4T60E for non SC'd 96 or I THINK there is an 4t60e-HD for a SC'd 96. These are very common and you should have no problem finding a used one. The point is, you should be looking for a 4T60E...

Possibly you could also use a 4t65e, but I have no idea what if any changes you would need.

Find a shop that will let you have a tranny shipped straight to them. Or find a shop that is willing to find one for you. Personally I would find my own.
