| I'd have to say no on a cowl hood. A subtle dual scoop hood, if well made, would look nice though | |

| could you do another with the black/red combo but stop the red where the front bumper trim pieces end?
I think it would give it a sharp look.

| Subject: Deterioration of aluminum hoods? Wed May 30, 2012 11:59 pm | |
| Has anybody ever had their aluminum hood (95-99) deteriorate? I haven't seen any signs on mine, but I was surprised to run across a series of complaints on another board about Ford aluminum hoods "oxidizing" to the point of perforation.
I would have thought that was impossible, since aluminum doesn't rust (which is another name for oxidization, if my high school chemistry serves). Does this ever happen to Rivs? (Hope not!!)

| When I got my '95 some years ago, small areas around the grille were starting to 'bubble', or oxidize. My 2000 SSEi's front hood lip was really bad when I got it. Common problem for the Bonne's, the Riv's aren't as bad, but it can happen. I've never personally heard of them completely 'rusting' through though! | |

| Aluminum does oxidize (rust), but it's different than steel in a couple ways. First, we don't see aluminum oxidation as easily, because it's metallic white in color, not red or brown. This makes it much less noticeable. Second, aluminum's oxidization forms a protective barrier, like some forms of stainless steel, in that the rust actually prevents further corrosion (passivation phenomena).
In the case of the Ford's hood oxidizing all the way through, it may have been formed from a type of aluminum alloy, some of which are vulnerable to attack from oxidation. _________________ '05 GTO 6.0L • 6-spd • 95k miles • 0-60: 4.8s • 16.9 avg MPG • Nelson Ledges Lap: 1:26'95 Celica GT 2.2L • 5-spd • 165k miles • 0-60: yes'98 SC Riviera • 281k miles • 298 HP/370 TQ • 0-60: 5.79s • ET: 13.97 @ 99.28 • 4087 lb • 20.1 avg MPG • Nelson Ledges Lap: 1:30 3.4" pulley • AL104 plugs • 180º t-stat • FWI w/K&N • 1.9:1 rockers • OR pushrods • LS6 valve springs • SLP headers • ZZP fuel rails KYB GR2 struts • MaxAir shocks • Addco sway bars • UMI bushings • GM STB • Enkei 18" EV5s w/ Dunlop DZ101s • F-body calipers EBC bluestuff/Hawk HP plus • SS lines • Brembo slotted discs • DHP tuned • Aeroforce • Hidden Hitch^^^ SOLD ^^^ '70 Ninety-Eight Holiday Coupe 455cid • 116k miles^^^ SOLD ^^^

| No rust here in Phoenix, just lots of paint fading if no covered parking. | |

| The biggest problem with our Rivieras is the paint, not the aluminum hood. The paint starts to look like someone took steel wool to the car, then it lifts and flakes off. The only remedy is to take it down to bare metal and refinish it. Doesn't seem to matter how well you take care of the paint. I've seen this on just about every Riviera I've come across. _________________ 98 Riviera SC3800 All stock except gutted air box. 1970 Buick GS455 Stage1, TSP built 470BBB, 602HP/589TQ Best MPH, 116.06 MPH, Best ET, 11.54 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHCda-t_Jls https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfT2tEO4XcU

The primer GM used dried too fast for the paint to adhere properly. The bubbling is a problem with the paint, not so much rust, as you said.
