BTW, I feel there's no need to do a Write-up on changing the gear set and chain. I don't see anybody trying to attempt this in a driveway or garage....Just to get the valve body off I think there's like 30 bolts, all ranging in length and sizes. What a pain....

This is really what write-ups are for. Rebuilding an auto trans is challenging stuff, but with your knowledge contribution I think a few of us could take it on. I looked into it and found the biggest hurdle was obtaining the right tools for the job ($$$$). I'm sure I'm not alone is saying I'd love to see pictures of your progress.

If you decide to contribute, here's the thread: https://rivperformance.editboard.com/t7473-write-up-4t65e-hd-transmission-rebuild

(Someone at Bonneville forums did an awesome write-up, but it is long-gone. Things don't seem to last for very long over there.)

PostSubject: Re: Abaddon's Riv   Abaddon's Riv - Page 9 EmptyFri May 10, 2013 9:55 am

It's not that I don't want to, it's just that I'm tying up a hoist in my shop, and when I do get to work on it, things move very fast. After I replaced the cradle mounts and was able to hang the trans down far enough to remove the side cover, I had it completely apart in less than an hour.
I do have pictures, but they aren't necessarily pictures of progress made, just pictures of 10,000 pieces spread out all over the place, and the broken stuff.

Don't be mad AA, I still love you. Time is just an issue.

Do what you can do when you have time. Maybe after you have it all done and aren't in a rush. I'm sure any information would be good to have on here anyway.

Well, the problem is, there are sooooo many parts and seals and clips and check balls and gaskets and washers and plates and clutches and bolts and bands etc etc etc....that all fit together nicely in one big giant cylinder. I would have to take pictures of every. single. step to make even a decent write-up. I suppose we could combine the TCC solenoid write-up I did a while back, as you have to do the exact same steps up to that point anyway....

This is why my writeups tend to be missing pictures. I usually don't have time to stop along the way, especially when my hands are covered with antifreeze and oil and I just want to get it running and don't have someone else there to grab my camera... so I describe it as best I can and take some pictures of the parts next to each other if I can etc...

My car work tends to get very limited on time these days, and I end up rushing to finish instead of documenting along the way.

The FSM has very useful instructions with diagrams BTW wink

Understand. I tend to shoot lots of pics, which admittedly slows down progress. Then a week, a month, or a year later I'll dig up the images up put together a write-up. Even if it's not complete, I think uploading pictures you took would be really interesting to see. Later on someone will have questions, and those answers could become the start of a good write-up.

Abaddon's Riv - Page 9 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Abaddon's Riv   Abaddon's Riv - Page 9 EmptySat May 11, 2013 7:13 pm

Well, stayed at the shop until about 9pm last night. The trans guy stayed with me until the trans was rebuilt. He left me about 7:45, but by then the only thing left was the side cover. I got the cradle up and mounted, then locked the gate and went home (I can stay until the cleaning crew leaves).
I went in today and put the rest of the car back together, only to find out that the random popping in my steering was due to a broken-in-half LF strut bearing (I replaced all the struts/bearings/springs last fall), which destroyed the upper spring insulator (the rubber). FYI to all, ADVANCE AUTO is the only store that has it in stock. My dealer doesn't even carry it. But, I got it all back together and drove it home.

WOW. That's it, WOW. It's amazing how tight the trans is now. I have to do some serious trans tweaking in the PCM. Even with the tune now, 4th gear shift is quite scary compared to what it was lol. I drove it home in 3rd after cringing at the BANG-shift into OD.
It's crazy how easy the car cruises with the new gears. With my exhaust, you can really hear the engine. It sounded like I was idling while cruising, no effort really at all to stay at speed. It's going to take some time to "learn" the car again, as all the shift points and what-not have changed.

This is what was all replaced...

All seals (including the shift servos)
All gaskets and filters (including all filters in the valve body)
Input piston
2nd piston
3rd piston
Input band
Coast band
Reverse band
Oil Pump shaft (hardened)
4th gear shaft (hardened)
Complete Raybestos Stage 1 HP clutch set
ZZP 3.29 Gear ratio conversion kit
EVERYTHING was completely inspected and cleaned THOROUGHLY

The oil pump shaft and 4th gear shaft were "borrowed" from a 2006 GP GXP. They have the same transmission, but with upgraded parts. My 4th and pump shafts were worn well beyond safe. I'm just glad that a band broke first...
In case you're wondering, it's sheer coincidence that we had a GXP in the air, and the trans completely apart on the bench. The torque converter grenaded, and it's getting a complete GM reman replacement. My trans guy "suggested" that I use it's hard parts. I felt like a kid....I'll take one of these, and one of those, and oh yes, this thing is definitely mine joy Without the coincidence, I would've been up shits creek...

I have quite a few pics. When I find the time, I will surely post them for you guys.

Brought my 'puter tower and the DHP into work today. I need to tune this thing. It lasted a day without tuning for the new gears, then yesterday it went into "default" mode and the SES light came on....max line pressure and converter lock-up lol. It feels like I'm driving with somebody who can't drive a stick shocked

Well, got the bugs worked out. All the harsh shifting, TCC searching and lockups, was nothing more than a software error. Car shifts and drives perfect now. It's amazing how a difference of 2.7 on a single value in the trans will completely f@ck stuff up. Simple mathematical error....

My car hasn't shifted this nicely since I've owned it

Got bored today. Ordered VC, and S/C gaskets. Also figured that since I'm going to have the VC's off, I ordered LS6 Valve Springs and some Viton valve seals. Almost 160K...I'm sure the valve springs and seals are a bit worn out. Besides, they're cheap and easy to replace.

I finally have a new data cord for my phone, so I'll be uploading the trans pics soon....

No, I have not blocked off my EGR. I tried it once, and I didn't like the results. There are no benefits or gains to be had by doing this. Unless you build a full blown race engine, don't bother.
The EGR system helps fuel economy and Intake air temperatures at idle and extended cruising speeds.

I agree. I'd rather have it over not, except when an IC is involved downstream of it. It gets filthy enough without the egr throwing more baked carbon at it

I have a gen 3 from him to start on this weekend. He didn't want me to do up his GenV.

Abaddon's Riv - Page 9 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Abaddon's Riv   Abaddon's Riv - Page 9 EmptyMon Jun 10, 2013 11:26 am

Welp Abaddon, I got some things done, but not as much as I'd have liked. I got dragged to a Stag and Doe, and was visiting my nephews. So not as much shop time as I wanted. But who can complain for essentially free work right? wink

The blower casing you sent is in really good shape. The bores are *very* clean with no major scoring, or marking at the end of the pack.
Abaddon's Riv - Page 9 IMGP5133

To start I decided to actually adapt my M62 plates to the Gen3 m90 properly. I did have a set of stand offs designed for the m90, but I wanted to only have to keep around one set of tooling for Eaton blowers. So I started with a drawing and a few calcs:
Abaddon's Riv - Page 9 IMGP5126

Center-drilled:
Abaddon's Riv - Page 9 IMGP5127

And drilled. I had to mount it low since the M62 plates are physically smaller and the Gen 3 M90 has some protruding bits:
Abaddon's Riv - Page 9 IMGP5128
Abaddon's Riv - Page 9 IMGP5129

And the other end. Had to work some stuff out since this plate got turned 90 deg. Science! It works Bitches!
Abaddon's Riv - Page 9 IMGP5130
Abaddon's Riv - Page 9 IMGP5131

And all ready for cutting:
Abaddon's Riv - Page 9 IMGP5132

Mounted and squared with the machine bed:
Abaddon's Riv - Page 9 IMGP5134

Then start hogging out the pocket. The Gen 3 has a good amount of width to remove to bring it flush with the "silencer dimples." Also the "H bar" gets toasted just in case you ever want to run an intercooler.
Abaddon's Riv - Page 9 IMGP5136
Abaddon's Riv - Page 9 IMGP5137

The facing outlet on the Gen 3 is different from the M62 and Gen V in that the material is thicker closer to the point of the triangle than the base. To make it flat for the pocket we take it to *just* before it lowest point. The bit of rough stuff left will assist in bonding the new insert plate, and not going too deep keeps as much material in the blower as possible.
Abaddon's Riv - Page 9 IMGP5138

And the pocket is done. Don't worry about the triangle shape, those flat bits won't stay. I just got most of the bolt material out of the way. The triangle and main porting will be done with the plate already bonded into the blower like it was for Z-types.
Abaddon's Riv - Page 9 IMGP5139

And a few more closer shots:
Abaddon's Riv - Page 9 IMGP5140
Abaddon's Riv - Page 9 IMGP5141

And that’s about as far as I got this past weekend. Still to do:
-Cut insert plate
-"glue" in
-Machine outlet geometry
-blend base of triangle
-polish to 1000gr
-bore inlet
-smooth inlet
-Press out old needle bearings
-Clean
-Inside bore coating(Basically a very thin DFL)
-Thermal barrier coating on outlet plate and inlet.
-Press in new needle bearings
-Add stainless steel hardware.

This is getting routine now, though every blower done gets tweaked a bit better. This Mark VI is going to rock!
