| Subject: new low note horn ? Tue Dec 04, 2012 1:58 pm | |
| Is it possible to mis-wire a new horn? I bought a replacement low note horn and had to cut the factory plug. So I just put connectors on the wires, plugged into horn and put it all back together.
HOWEVER, from outside, it sounds decent...but inside it's an odd reverb sound...very un-horn like.
Possible that I need to switch the + and -?? Or does that even matter?
Thanks!

| the new horn might be a different low note than the old. | |

| it is.. I think i'll unhook the high note to hear the low by itself. but can the + and - be wrong? ...I can switch them too.. just curious. inside, it sounds like they're under water! | |

inside, it sounds like they're under water! Used to be horns had metal cases and the (-) was the case. So if you wired backwards you'd have a short and blow a fuse. If polarity is important it will be marked on your new horn. Typically the (-) is not an insulated terminal and the (+) is - again, if it matters. Now if you are concerned about phasing the waveforms, that is a little trickier. The first thing I would do is figure out what not the horns are each playing and then figure out what the interval is. Play it on a piano to get an idea what it could sound like. It may be that you just don't have a euphonic interval. My D Eb A F horn sounds kind of snarly, actually. Thing that amuses me is the mecahnics at the local GM dealer like to blow it (more than they need to) when the car is in for service. Don't need to guess at which horn it is... sounds like an Alto with an attitude... | |

| I'm going to unhook the OEM high note and hear the low by itself. I think it's a combo of non metal resonance and the waves from both interacting.
I did buy a big double air horn, LOUD...but there's no room under the hood for it.

| You might mount that air horn behind the radiator. Be sure to use stainless hardware so you can remove and reinstall for service. Also it maybe might fit n place of one or the other OE horn if you take OE horn out. | |
