Subject: FAQ: Mufflers? Sun Mar 11, 2007 1:36 am
What mufflers have you all used that are good. I think i want to replace the oem mufflers with something else. I would kind of like to not spend a ton of money on it so unless i somehow find it on ebay or something for cheap, flowmasters are out of the question (unless im convinced they are worlds better than anything) ive heard borla are good and they seem to be reasonably low priced. glasspacks would be an inexpensive option for me. Tell me what you think. (in case it matters, i have a 97 s/c with all stock exhaust)

flowmasters suck. I am partial to dynomax ultraflow and its cheaper copy, the hooker maximum flow. They are essentially the same, but the max flow is cheaper because its aluminized steel, not stainless. They have the best flow capabilities, are quiet at idle but scream at WOT. The both have a straight through design. You will most likely need a resonator to eliminate drone.
Hooker Aerochambers flow very well too and will be a little bit quieter than the max flow.
The mufflers that flow the LEAST are flowmasters and thrush turbos.

I haven't replaced my mufflers yet, but based on reports from other L67 cars, I'm probably going with Borla Turbo.
I have some extra cash, and I wanna get some stuff. I already decided that I need new plugs, and to seafoam my engine. But I also wanna pick up two mufflers, and I don't wanna drop that much and get something I wasn't looking for.. so if anyone can drop some tips on an exhaust and tip brand, that'd be pretty rad. I was looking on jegs and I came across this
29.99 each but I was gonna go with dual outlet 3.00'' Center Inlet/ Dual 2.50'' Outlets9.5'' x 4.0'' x 13.0'' body 19'' long overall
has anyone heard anything about these?

alright good deal. will you lose low end torque using those?
not with them that far down the exhaust line, the difference in back pressure at the heads should be acute. Plus, our engines aren't that bad with low back pressure in the first place thanks to the s/c and general design of the motor (as opposed to opening up a dohc 4 banger too much)

From videos and such of other people's magnaflow mufflers, I've found i'm not particularly fond of them for some reason. Flowmasters are hit or miss. those bastiches with V8's can put anything on there and it sounds good hisssss! I'm doin glasspacks cause I haven't really seen it done and I want to try something different. Plus they should be a pretty easy install. knock on wood

I'm pretty much as cheap as they get, but don't use a thrush muffler. They have a lot of back pressure.
I would recommend hooker maximum flows. They are a copy of the dynomax ultra flos, but are much cheaper because they are aluminized steel (obviously the ultraflos are awesome but they will cost you). Hooker aerochambers flow extremely well too and have a nice tone.
If you MUST go cheap (very cheap) I would go with the summit turbos before the thrush mufflers. They flow surprinsingly well for the price.

I would scope out ebay for a while and try to get a 3" resonator or circular 3"muffler and follow with 2x 2.5" or 2.25" mufflers after the split.
If you don't mind not having two tailpipes, a 3" resonator with a single good quality (not a summit turbo or thrush) 2.5" muffler will do nicely and save a little weight.

I am running dual Borla XS/Turbo mufflers. Im a cheap ass 6@$†@®d, but after I heard them on a few Big Dog Regals, I was sold. When you are cruising around town stopping for stop signs and putzing about, the car is really quiet. When you get into it, it roars with out being harsh. At idle it sounds stock unless you are next to the tip. I got mine on Ebay at a good discount. I just checked and they run about 100 each shipped on ebay, but if you are patient you can probibly find a slightly better deal.
At the same time, Borlas are just fancy glass packs. Who knows, there has to be a bargain muff out there that sounds similar.
As for tips, I am pretty happy with Ractive tips. I know a lot of other rivy folks are running ractives. The chrome is still in great shape on mine. These are what I am running: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/RACTIVE-PERFORMANCE-STAINLESS-STEEL-EXHAUST-TIP-T815_W0QQitemZ320079470675QQcmdZViewItem
This is the Ractive product line. http://www.toucanindustries.com/index.php?src=directory&view=products&srctype=lister&submenu=Ractive&category=Exhaust+Tips&pos=0,15,70
Drop a part number in froogle.com and some decent deals should turn up.

is there a noticable differerence between round and oval mufflers? or is it just for looks? these don't look too bad, and for the price, it's tempting. thoughts?
