Question: when reinstalling the TB, should any RTV be used on the new gasket? It looks like none is required. Anyone have thoughts?

No RTV on the TB gasket , you don't want silicone anything around the fuel for starters.

I removed my TB today as well., The back of the butterfly was covered in crud which I suspect might be some K&N filter oil.. I cleaned the heck out of it and will put it in tomorrow. I gotta go to the parts store for a new TB gasket cause mine cracked off. I'm pondering replacing the MAF. Anyone know how to test it?

Best test for MAFF is to have the car scanned. If your sensor is bad you'd probably notice some issues when driving, stalling, etc. MAF sensors don't usually go bad, and should be cleaned once in a while with MAF or electronic parts cleaner.

It's neat to get in there and clean it, but that crud behind the TB plate isn't going to make much difference in performance, and it isn't causing your SES. Get it scanned and you'll know more about what's going on.

The first thing to do is get the SES code read. Best thing to do is get your own scanner such as Car Code (www.obd-2.com) or an Actron (see their web site - don't just get a code reader, get a scanner that reads the sensors in real time).

Be sure to wipe out what part of the intake you can see when you have the TB off. You can stuff a clean rag into it before spraying and wiping, as long as you remember to get all of said rag back out before reassembly.

When you get the code read we can help you figure out what's amiss.

I cannot figure out how the hell to get that black bracket off.

There were two 8MM bolts on the front, and a 13MM nut attached to a stud underneath the rear of the bracket. Still won't budge. Not sure where the hell it's connected still.

Should only be 3 nuts holding the TB on. Here are some pics from my rebuild over the summer:

https://rivperformance.editboard.com/t9354p60-write-up-3800-series-ii-sc-engine-removal-installation

These nuts are not on very tight, and should be reinstalled to 89 IN-lb.

Sniper - Robo is right. The bracket that's in your way is a heat shield that is bolted onto the side of the rear cylinder head. Should be either two 15mm bolts or a 13 and 15mm bolt, I can't remember exactly. Not as bad as it sounds!

Thanks for the pics Robo, those are useful. Is your car not equipped with cruise? Just wondering cuz I only see one throttle cable. Also my power steering reservoir is mounted on top of the bracket. :/

Here's a pic I found of the hiding bolt (courtesy of Karma) for my exact bracket. It's 13MM.
