Subject: Questions About Projector Headlights? Tue Mar 25, 2008 4:54 pm
Ok so i\'ll try to be short i\'ve made projectors headlights they look awesome but i got a big problem,do any year of last gen riviera get glass headlight lenses cause i\'m actually burning the lenses (after about 30 min or so on a battery charger at boost ) the globes are too thin to put the entire assembly of a projector so i was forced to shorten it a little and it heat up.if it dosent exist does anyone knows about a coating or anything i absolutely love their look but now i\'m hitting a wall. :headbutt:I\'m open to any ideas.I\'ll do a write up if i can make em work they are pretty simple to make(when you know wat u r doing and......they r pretty cheap to do.

Halogen (out of an acura)can't find a hid just to test lens(glass one in projector) seem to focus light a little too much on one spot(who blemish and bubble)wonder if a purple one would make less heat.but i'll check for hid friday when i'll go to my weekly trip to speed shop.

If you're referring to the color of the HID lamp, it makes no difference in heat either way, as far as I know. The standard for them is 35 watt and K-rating shouldn't affect thermal heat. That would also solve you're excessive focusing problem. What number bulb fits that projector you have?

Snowdog, you should find a headlamp housing and try it out on the Riv!
maybe will think about it found one riv from estonia what has been crached from right side. hope i can buy the whole car as parts. and if i get it, will have lots of plans whit it ...one idea was to change the lamps so they would look more like 'factory hid lamps'(hid pulbs are ilegal to install into halogen lamps in est) to awoid trobble on the eavery year car checking or how ever its called.

Let me just reinforce that I am now strongly opposed to HID retrofits. I was just outside taking the garbage to the street and this car had really really bright blue lights that looked too cyan to be factory - they looked like 10k to me, maybe the step above. Anyways, it was a damn Honda as I could tell when he gunned it and I know they never come with HIDs. I looked at his lights when he came back, they were so overly bright they were lighting the road in front of my house and he was at the end of the subdivision. I looked at his lights and they glared badly. They were aimed down but they were still making way too much glare. The pattern was erratic and looked like ass.
I'm going to chock HID retrofits without projector beam housings into the rice list. This guys car looked like trash with his cheap little HID kit. I'm definitely looking into the HIR route though, will report back when I eventually buy the bulbs as to my results. HID retrofits are illegal in Europe but due to a technicality in the US they're not, although they should be. If anyone builds a projector headlight and HID conversion on here please post that up - it'd be nice to see a Riviera with proper HIDs.
Here, check out the glare on ricey badly done HID retrofits:
Spoiler:
Notice the glare? Blinding. Now for comparison please view a factory equipped HID car:

Sorry, it's hard to find many picture of stock HID lamps. The internet is full of jerry rigged ricey looking HID retrofits even on cars like older Audis and BMWs. Very sad. I wish it weren't so, but I will not do HIDs unless I get projector beams installed. Here's how you can do it if someone here wants to take a whack at it:
I don't have the means to do such a project myself, but I'm sure someone here does. The projectors look to be the part that is fairly pricey. Here's an example of a full kit with projectors and all: http://store.theretrofitsource.com/product_info.php?products_id=64&osCsid=3f769aeaed5e4e53721057f9a689fc1b

If you're going to retrofit do it right or don't do it I say. Just my .02...

that supra and BMW in your "glare" pics probably have real projectors. the only difference i see is the ability to take pictures of bright things vs an amateur photographer.
i wouldnt go back to oem bulbs for nothin!

Well, some error is possible with the photos but as a general HID retrofits not done properly (With a projector housing) provide dangerous glare to other drivers. Ever noticed how you have never seen a "HID bulb"? Because cars with HIDs have projectors. The usual $100 made in China kit available on eBay and ZZPerformance are pretty cheesy seeing as quality kits with nice ballasts are around $500 or more. I might some day do the high quality HID kit conversion, but to me nasty HIDs that glare and have poor pattern dispersion on the road are no better than those stupid blue painted headlamp bulbs. Well except those blue painted bulbs aren't that expensive or hazardous to other drivers.
I quote someone from the North American Subaru forums: "The filament in a bulb produces light in one spot. Lighting engineers shape the reflector and optics around where that filament is placed. The reflector and optics will place the light in a pattern in front of the car so you can see. If you move the location of the filament, the location of where the light is going changes as well. So when you put an HID retrofit in one of these halogen housings the light scatters into places you don’t want it to go. The light will most likely go into oncoming traffic instead of right in front of your car. So putting HID’s in a lamp housing made for halogens will not only be unsafe to you, but they are illegal as well."
