Timing gear question. Empty
PostSubject: Timing gear question.   Timing gear question. EmptyThu Oct 06, 2011 5:26 pm

Just a question on the timing gears in our engines. I know on alot of the older engines that I am familiar with, the OEM cam gear had nylon or plastic tips on the teeth. My question is, do any of the 3800 engines have the same thing, and if not, when did they discontinue using them. On our older engines, the tips usually break off and end up in the pan. Anyone know?

Last time i had the front of my motor apart it was all metal teeth. Not sure when that changed.

I can't recall if the S1 3800s had the nylon teeth but all of the Series II 3800s have been metal. I honestly haven't seen a timing chain failure in a SII 3800.

As I recall it was only the old RWD Buick V8s that had the nylon cam gear. Don't know if the turbo 6 3.8s had metal or nylon.
