You need the special tool or else you will F up the SC snout. I am not saying it wouldnt work but I wouldnt risk it.

Some vendors rent the tool, or you could post on clubgp.com and see if some one in your area would do the install for a little donation.

yeah, your best bet is to find someone local that you can borrow it from. its possible to do it w/ a 3jaw puller but its not worth the risk and may not always work. the newer style zzp puller is probably the best. i wouldnt bother w/ press-ons, just go straight to a modular system.

I know this tool is needed to take the s/c pulley off. But I have never used one, and honestly I don't know exactly why it is needed. Is the tool for removing the bolt on the pulley or just pulling the pulley off? Or both?

just pulling the pulley off. It screws into the snout and applies even pressure to the pulley to remove it.

1) very important: use a new hexhead stud for EACH pulley installation. You don't want it snapping off in the snout like mine did.

2) use lube on the threaded 5/8 rod. You don't want the thread galling like mine did.

yes, I was cluster fubared when I did this. I had to remove the snout and use a hydraulic press to get the 3.4 pulley that was 3/4 way on pressed all the way in. Now if I want to go for a 3.2, I need to take off the snout completely as the threads inside the snout are toast.

If ever one of you guys wants to borrow a puller, you can use mine if you cover return shipping. I have a couple of hex head studs left, but you will most likely have to buy another threaded rod from ZZP (approx 30$) as mine is galled. Still, 30+ one way shipping with no deposit is pretty decent.

Lol, I think I remember you posting about renting your puller on RegalGS. But thanks for the info! I thought it was for taking it off evenly.

What is the hexhead stud and 5/8 rod you talk about? I am not experienced with the snout componenets. I just use a ratched to take off the bolt?

ps I might take you up on the rental but the problem with that is it might take a while if coming from Canada and I want to fix this leak asap. But PM me or just post about renting right here and maybe we can work it out.

One of the advantages of an MPS is you only need to install it one time (if rebuilding, do it beforehand). If you buy from INTENSE, they install it for free on site. That's the way I did mine.

you can rent a pulley tool from most auto stores. I know mine (murrays - actually CSK) you just leave a deposit for the tool and get it back in full when you return it. in the end you pay nothing but the gas to go to the store

then this is how its set up to remove, notice the plate will sit on the back of the pulley vs. the front when removing...it also comes with copper anti-seize for lubrication of threads, and the 2 washers.

you can rent a balancer puller/press, a power steering puller, spring compressor, and just about any other puller you can think of at places like autozone/advance. however a supercharger pulley puller is different than all of those, and they do not carry them. the only place to rent them is online or at a performance shop that specificly works on blown engines. if there is a local club you could join it and go to a meet and borrow it from one of the other m90 guys. there are parts of club GP all over and someone in the group has a puller.

ok. I just did it. The thrasher rental tool had instructions with it so it was reasonably simple to do. Very cool! I also just put Stant's Heavy duty 180 thermostat in it a couple days ago too and that definatelly works well.

Glad it went well. It's kind of a scarey process as you are messing with a very important and expensive piece of equipment (the s/c).

Did your threaded m8 shaft snap when you reinstalled the pulley?

I still don't know what that little plastic retainer pinny deal is for, that came with the pulley. Is it supposed to replace the little end bolt / breather for the s/c shaft? If so, should I use that? I put the original breather back on. It was a little tricky only because the modular pulley screws are in the way of a socket. I used an open end and some care

nope. I used a little bit of grease and snugged it like the instructions said and I was fine. btw What the hell would you do if that did snap? sad

Just take it out. Its not a big deal and I think they try to design it so if it does snap it is exposed and easy to take out w/ pliars and/or a screw driver. worst comes to worse I would just drill it. I think with a small enough bit and some luck the bit would just catch the little rod and back it out.

And I am not sure about the piece you speak of. What does it look like? got a pic?

How much hernia inducing force did you have to use to get the pulley off? I have my 3.5" that I am procrastinating over. I purchased the INTENSE kit.

With some, or all? mps kits you order, you get a replacement plastic breather plug to go in place of the OEM breather. I suppose just in case your OEM piece is junk. Got one with my Pulley Boys kit too. It really looks like it is just an interior plastic trim push-in fastener. I'd use the OEM breather if it is in good shape.
