It depends on the year of the engine. 1995 - NO, you have to remove the SC 96-99 - Yes No reason to take the SC off for 95 to change the pulley. (you might have been thinking the coupler). The m62 from 95 is keyed, so its easy on and off with a normal pulley puller. _________________

| I guess i do deserve the Big Red Flag after all. I was indeed thinking about the requirement of replacing the coupler not the pulley. My Bad, I hope I didn't cause any unnecessary labor for you Bryan. | |

| I have a 96 rivi and I'm looking at purchasing a 3.5 pully to replace the OEM and replace the thermostat, and possibly some cooler spark plugs. But I was wondering how difficult it would be to replace the pully, and if I could do it on my own. | |

| You will require a pulley puller tool made specifically for this process. Your best bet may be to find someone with a tool near you and have them help you with the swap.
I would recommend installing an MPS and a larger pulley to start. Most pulley swaps have a lot of KR, even a lot of stock motors have KR.
Where are you located? | |

| yo yo yo. I put my 3.6" on yesterday and now I have some nasty belt chirping going on. At first I suspected it was some SC oil that must have dripped on it after cracking the snout off but now im not sure. It wasn't making any noise before I put the new pulley on. I figured if it was just oil then it would fix itself by now and it hasnt.
Any tips from the pros? Do I just get a new belt or am I missing some obvious like usual?

| How's the belt tension? Did you replace the belt at the same time or just reuse your old belt? | |

| I am using ZZP pulley with my old belt. old but good condition. The belt sits in the middle of the grooves with 1 on each side of the belt. It's nice and straight. Tension is also fine. The only thing I can think of is oil on the belt from the SC oil change but i dont think it would make these sounds. CHIRP CHIRP CHIRP CHIRP SHUT UP! | |

| After my car sits I get a belt chirp from the SC belt and have brand new belts. A couple shots of WD-40 at the tensioner pulley gets rid of the sound until the next time it sits! | |

| When you spray WD40, you're lubricating the belt, which stops the noise. This indicates a belt/pulley alignment issue. Check none of your pulleys are loose or wobbly. Spraying water will do the same thing. If the noise gets louder when you spray, it indicates a belt slip issue. _________________ '05 GTO 6.0L • 6-spd • 95k miles • 0-60: 4.8s • 16.9 avg MPG • Nelson Ledges Lap: 1:26'95 Celica GT 2.2L • 5-spd • 165k miles • 0-60: yes'98 SC Riviera • 281k miles • 298 HP/370 TQ • 0-60: 5.79s • ET: 13.97 @ 99.28 • 4087 lb • 20.1 avg MPG • Nelson Ledges Lap: 1:30 3.4" pulley • AL104 plugs • 180º t-stat • FWI w/K&N • 1.9:1 rockers • OR pushrods • LS6 valve springs • SLP headers • ZZP fuel rails KYB GR2 struts • MaxAir shocks • Addco sway bars • UMI bushings • GM STB • Enkei 18" EV5s w/ Dunlop DZ101s • F-body calipers EBC bluestuff/Hawk HP plus • SS lines • Brembo slotted discs • DHP tuned • Aeroforce • Hidden Hitch^^^ SOLD ^^^ '70 Ninety-Eight Holiday Coupe 455cid • 116k miles^^^ SOLD ^^^ | |

The problem with WD-40 is that in addition to a little bit of lubricant you are also spraying a lot of penetrant and solvent. That can wash out the OE bearing grease and replaces it with a very light lubricant that won't last long. Use straight silicone spray instead, unless you specifically need to penetrate or dissolve something (rusty/dirty etc). WD-40 is great for cleaning and lubricating ratchet heads, for example... but not what you should spray on a bearing. edit - I should read more thoroughly. You definitely don't want to lubricate the belt! It's most likely the bearing squeaking.

| Change the belt. A new belt should last 90-100k miles without any special maintenance.
I agree with deekster on the wd40. if you're going to spray anything on the belts, use water only. This is actually the recommended procedure for troubleshooting belt noise - from Gates and Dayco. _________________ '05 GTO 6.0L • 6-spd • 95k miles • 0-60: 4.8s • 16.9 avg MPG • Nelson Ledges Lap: 1:26'95 Celica GT 2.2L • 5-spd • 165k miles • 0-60: yes'98 SC Riviera • 281k miles • 298 HP/370 TQ • 0-60: 5.79s • ET: 13.97 @ 99.28 • 4087 lb • 20.1 avg MPG • Nelson Ledges Lap: 1:30 3.4" pulley • AL104 plugs • 180º t-stat • FWI w/K&N • 1.9:1 rockers • OR pushrods • LS6 valve springs • SLP headers • ZZP fuel rails KYB GR2 struts • MaxAir shocks • Addco sway bars • UMI bushings • GM STB • Enkei 18" EV5s w/ Dunlop DZ101s • F-body calipers EBC bluestuff/Hawk HP plus • SS lines • Brembo slotted discs • DHP tuned • Aeroforce • Hidden Hitch^^^ SOLD ^^^ '70 Ninety-Eight Holiday Coupe 455cid • 116k miles^^^ SOLD ^^^

| Just got that 4060720 Gatorback belt in the mail today. I am at the office and I want to get it on before I drive home. Anyone know what size torx socket the tensioner pulley needs? | |

| T50. I hope you realize that changing the belts on these cars is a bit involved unless you have cut the lower spacer in half. _________________ 98 Riviera SC3800 All stock except gutted air box. 1970 Buick GS455 Stage1, TSP built 470BBB, 602HP/589TQ Best MPH, 116.06 MPH, Best ET, 11.54 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHCda-t_Jls https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfT2tEO4XcU
