Write-Up: Paint Job

Just thought I'd pass along what I started this past weekend. beer

I got this much apart in one day, am hoping to have the rest of the trim, quarter windows and $h!†, off by this weekend and finish prepping it for paint. thumbsup

The masking tape is marking where there are flaws that need fixed! nono

I'm going to keep the rocker mouldings original and replace the tail pipes with the Black Chrome ones.
Maybe then I can compete with some of the other sharp Black Rivieras here! wink

i saw the pic before i read the title and thought you were in an accident :shock: how did you remove the side moldings? i thought about getting just those repainted b/c there are a few dings and tough-up spots frown

are you doing the painting yourself?
...and how do you keep the chrome wheels mirror clean? you must have just washed her

They kind of just pull off...VERY CAREFULLY! I broke some of the tabs on the right side, hope I can get them off of my parts car without breaking them, if not I'll just see about bonding the tabs back on.

My brother and I are doing it, he can do real good paint work when I can get him up and around.

Yes, I had just had it in a show here on the Air Force Base the weekend before, so it was pretty well cleaned up when I started tearing it apart!
I use Mothers Chrome polish, I've found it works best, it takes around 8-10 hours to polish the chrome on the Harley so I want it right the first time!

There are five bolts that are part of the molding that hold it in place while the adhesive dries. headbutt

,That you remove after taking out the interior that is. A real pain to "CUT" out, I might actually have to replace the one on the drivers side! nono

It has a mirror reflexion now. Can't really tell it needs to be painted from your pics. Thanks for the updates. I'm sure some of us will tackle this project someday too.

Doing it this way the only thing that will have to be taped off is the glass and the wheels, after all this work it had better turn out perfect....I hope anyway!

The acid rain stained it pretty good, we had already painted the bumpers and the hood and the trunk lid but the rest of it, the top and fenders, the clear was pretty much polished away, and the paint under it looked real bad.

I am thinking of getting a touch up on my diamond white riv. No digs really, no rust, but there are a few "issues". Obviously black is much less forgiving then white, but do you think I could get away with area touch ups and not a whole paint job?

Not professionals, my brother, the large guy, worked at a body shop that put out very good paint jobs, for over a year and learned quite a lot about it. The place he worked had a couple of cars that were there for over two years. The owner didn't really like to do complete paint jobs, his bread and butter is bump and paint, replace a fender or panel match it up and get his check from the ins. co. He does do the best work that I have seen but if you wanted a complete paint job you paid for it and he "Got to it when he could" that’s why it would take so long. So Phil learned quit a bit, that's why it looks like we, he, knows what he is doing.
As far as a touch up, I just went through hell getting a couple of issues taken care of on the Silver Arrow. "Blending" paint is a whole different ball game than a complete paint job and since I didn't have time for Scott to do it I took it to a very reputable place close to home. They were able to blend the Sterling Silver Metallic paint perfectly, and that seemed to be the only thing they could do correctly! After many trips, picking it up and dropping it off they finally got it close enough that with a some detailing I should be able to get it right. So be very careful choosing a body shop because a touch up can be very stressful, and I'm sure the Diamond White can be almost as difficult to blend as Silver!

Don't know about any trophy and HOPEFULLY it 'll be ready.

400 sand this coat of primer, one more primer coat then 600 wet sand it.

He had better get paint on it by this Friday so we can get it buffed and I can get started putting it back together. I'm only going to have three weekends to finish it!

Yes, my brother lives across the state from me and the place he has to work on it is there, 150 miles from me. He does work on it some while I'm not there. With the 250 plus miles I drive back and forth to work weekly and the trips to work on the Riv on weekends, I have put around 4000 miles on my truck in the last two months, bonk

with gas prices the way they are it probably would end up costing less to have someone else do, the problem with that is the only guy I trust would take WAY TOOOO long. nono
